Even in Tree Hugging, CA where you are allowed to split lanes, (motorcycles) and motorcyclists are treated as second class citizens. You are allowed to use the HOV lane. If you split lanes, it is at your own risk. If some cager chages lanes without looking and into you, it isn't his fault. AARP has so much influence that it is difficult to get senile drivers off the road. Motorcyclists need an Org. that is at least half as infuential. Afterall, we dramatically reduce gasoline consumption and traffic jams. We deserve more!
