what's my klr worth??

Post by Arden Kysely » Mon Sep 22, 2008 12:58 pm

After 19 years on KLRs, I've moved on to a BMW F800GS and need to sell my old friend. Since it's over 10 years old, but still quite serviceable, I have no idea what it's worth. Here's the scoop: 1997 KLR 650, approx 37,500 miles. Runs good, ready to ride. Second owner, since 1999. Dual-Star shift lever Dual-Star water pump guard Radiator guard Acerbis hand guards (all plastic) Progressive Suspension shock Progressive Suspension fork springs Moose aluminum skid pan Wolfman glove compartment Spare stock shift lever Spare levers Spare water pump seal Spare clutch category Spare right (and left?) side case gaskets EBC oversized brake rotor (new) Sagebrush Machine doohickey Totally Wired Cycles fuse re-location w/blade fuses Totally Wired Cycles fan relay bypass New IRC GP-1 tires front and rear

It sounds like a bike with all the goodies done to it. Sadly, they don't get you much money. I'd start perusing craigslist and ebay to look at comparable bikes. An enthusiast might pay more what with doohickeys and such, which might not mean much to your garden variety cheap-bike purchaser. I'd put it out for $2200 and see what happens. I paid $1000 for my '01 with 2900 miles and doo, subframe and fuse mods. I can't see myself paying over $3000 for a regular KLR unless it was really special. Mainly because anything over that, and you can find the same thing cheaper elsewhere.

klr650 :exhaust pressure

Post by Luc Legrain » Mon Sep 22, 2008 2:57 pm

I tinkered with the stock exhaust this week end (few pictures on Flickr), I removed the spark cone and pipe, drilled 10-12 5/8" holes thru the baffles, 4 5/8" holes at the weld connecting the expantion chamber with the exhaust outlet, replaced the stock exhaust stub with a 1 3/4"short pipe BUT at idle there is quite a bit of pressure at exhaust tube, does not "feel " right .Should I go for a 2-2 1/2" stub ? What is normal exhaust pressure ? Any risks of damage to the thumper the way it is now ? Thanks

So you changed your Braking Systems rotor for an EBS. Is the difference significant ? Enjoy your new ride, Arden. Bogdan

Bogdan, My Braking rotor thinned out beyond spec, so I replaced it with an EBC and new pads from Fred. I'd say performance is roughly the same, but this one has a little howl that I thought would go away after everything bedded in. After 700 miles or so, it's still there. I'm loving my new GS. It's everything I remember from riding it at the press intro earlier this year...a bit like a KLR, but with horsepower, modern suspension, and better brakes. Can't wait to get it broken in and have some real fun. (Great headlight, too.) __Arden
