progressive which way up

Post by kent.jorgenson » Wed Aug 20, 2008 9:52 am

I decided to tackle my fork seals yesterday. It's the second time they had to be replaced in the last 4 years. Lots of info out there on how to do it. I used the compressor to blow them out. About a 100lbs, yes I blew a little oil in my face. My questions is this: Which way do progressive springs go back in? Tight end up or tight end down? They came out tight end down, which seems a little backwards to me. Any thoughts appreciated. jorg

I put the tight coils at the bottom but either way is fine. Mechanically, it makes no difference. --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "kent.jorgenson" wrote:

My instructions said "tight coils go at the top". Don R100, A6F --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "kent.jorgenson" wrote:

Jorg, One up and the other one down. To prevent uneven wear, at every oil change interval remove the springs and re-insert with the tight end the other direction -and- rotate them 180 degrees in the forks. Don't forget that tight coils down displaces more fork oil so adjust accordingly. Ignore the maintenance slackers on this list who say this is overkill. It's all about how much you really care for your KLR. :) :) Steve A13 -------------- My questions is this: Which way do progressive springs go back in? Tight end up or tight end down? If that is not enough for you, let me pull your coat about Don Rolando's fork spring bearings. I have 'em, and you don't. Nyah.

[spam][dsn_klr650] surge or coughing

Post by Hedrek » Wed Aug 20, 2008 2:34 pm

I had the same problem one day here near Albuquerque. I was probably also at 6,000 feet taht day, going uphill on a nice little dirt road from Placitas. It was hot that day too. Problem went away and I kept worrying it would return and never did. I've been meaning to do the T vent mod (for a year now) so maybe I'll get it done this weekend. Robert Hedrick Albuquerque, NM

But......Monte, my bike exhibited similar symptoms a few years ago. I tried a variety of solutions-petcock, carb on and on to no avail. The missing caused me to cancel a trip to Mexico. It only happened on clear hot days after 30 miles or so of riding on pavement-never on dirt or gravel, I live at 6000 feet and the sun is very strong. I can t prove it but what I think cured the problem was installing the T vent mod ( in my case a Y ) into the tube venting the carburetor. The vent tube travels close to the pavement. The super hot pavement somehow kept the carb from breathing steadily. When I ran the extra tube under the seat it never happened again.
