Do the performance exhaust pipes with jet kits really make a big difference in your gas mileage? What about the way the KLR runs? I'm finally considering one, gas is still at $4.41 per gallon here.

Does the price of fuel argue for or against a pipe? Rejetting for a pipe will usually hurt your gas mileage. Adding the pipe does little if anything for your performance, typically adding a couple of horsepower in the midrange at the expense of a couple at the peak. Of course, YMMV, but if you want more performance out of your bike, first spend the money on suspension. If you just want a louder bike, then...

The KLR is pretty economoical for a 650 carbureted single. Most mileage gains will come from riding habits. Anything you do to enhance performance will be accompanied with a decrease in MPG, especially if you "enjoy" the added performance. I see the best mileage if I keep speed to 40-60 MPH, keep the revs below 5000 and don't accelerate hard. How boring, right? But you said MPG, and thats the best way to get there. Mileage decreased when I ride 70MPH and run it up hard in the twisties. You be the judge. I added a low resistance muffler, and moved the richness screw out as recommended, but thats it. I'm getting a consistend 60MPG, and am pretty satisfied.

All, I would like a louder bike, I have a habit of near misses with dear. My brother on his XR650 has a white brothers exhaust and has alot less run ins with deer, my theory is its his loud exhaust. I like supertrapp, but its a bit expensive for my blood. I saw a forum post on advrider using a muffler for a John Deere tractor that was fairly attractive to me, but I have not got a definitive answer from anyone about the sound of the tractor exhaust. Rode with a SuperCrap/SupperTripe for while. My advise is don t buy one. Have my doubts about your deer theory but who knows ? Bogdan, who thinks in most things quiet is better. Doesn t even like to camp near a loud stream, prefers the sound of wind through the trees. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Since pipes generally direct the sound to the rear of the bike, the extra loudness is most noticed as you're driving by and beyond. Loud pipes serve to pi$$ people off more than they "save lives." Mark

Richard, While I'm a big fan of quieter bikes (mostly due to habits of riding in areas that are accepted but not necessarily legal) if you really want a louder exhaust, drill six 3/8" holes in the back of your stock exhaust. I did this a long time ago on a bike now long missing when we on the list originally went searching for the cure to tweety. Makes it louder, and doesn't cost much. I don't know that it will do anything for run ins with your "dear" though. Does she just like Hondas better? da Vermonster

With all stock engine and 'rough-tuned' jet kit, I went from 60mpg down to 43. I didn't notice a whole lot of difference except a mass of power coming on at 5000rpm. I probably didn't have the jetkit setup just right either. :) (haven't gotten a sniffer yet). I want to replace my pipe because the bike makes a loud tweety noise which almost drowns the VW bug of yore sound.

I could've sworn there was a video on Youtube showing that exhaust. I haven't stopped by the tractor place to pick up the DR-8 pipe yet. I was pondering gutting my pipe first.

You can get rid of Tweety without too much trouble or cost, even if you have to buy a few tools to get the job done. http://www.angelfire.com/planet/foxinsocks1947/tweetyfix.htm Alan Henderson A13 Iowa Reverend wrote:
