The Trans America Trail is east/west going between Tennessee I think and Oregon. I think a quick google search will allow you to find an entire evenings worth of reading on either subject. I think you can find a lot of routes at http://bike.stu.ph . That site allowed (I haven't been there in over a year so don't know if it's still current) folks to upload routes for GPS use. It had all the tracks from De Tour which was a fun ride I took with Steve Rankin in 2006. It also had a lot of other tracks on it too. I think Pat started that site in Jan of 2007. If you'll be visiting the Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota please feel free to let me know. Maybe I can share some "special" routes or if the scheduling is good give you a guided tour for a day or two. One other source that I find very helpful is the DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteer for each state you'll be riding in. The one problem is sometimes a road looks really good on the map but on the ground it's been gone for 20 years or is posted. Best price I've found for Gazetteers is at www.amazon.com . If you order two you'll probably qualify for free shipping as long as you don't mind it taking up to 10 days. I did this in the last 30 days and they were delivered in 5 days. You can also find these at many book stores and some sporting goods store and truck stops.
