bike/accessory shops in michigan (nklr)

Post by Darren Clark » Fri Aug 01, 2008 9:56 pm

Does anybody know of any good bike shops in lower Michigan within 30 miles of the Lansing or Ann Arbor area that carry a good selection of gear and helmets? My favorite place (Recreational Leisure in Farmington Hills) shut down. Darren Clark 2004 KLR-650 Fowlerville, MI

Darren, Google "Cycle Gear" to see if they've a shop there. I find them VERY good, especially their "bargain racks". Ed

rear suspension lube all years

Post by Mike » Sun Aug 03, 2008 8:16 pm

This topic comes up frequently. Some people have not seen the pic's of the needle bearings completely rusted, or the bolts rusted to the inner races. Sometimes there isn't any rust, and sometimes there is some grease in the bearings. I've seen almost all years of the KLR getting the rear suspension lubed, and IMHO it's a good thing to do. I can send pic's of the rusted bolts to anyone that wants them. I haven't personally opened up a bike that had the needles rusted away, but I have seen the pic's. Here is a site with a how-to for those that wish to install grease fittings. http://members.cox.net/watt-man/Zerk%20Installation.html Remember to loosen the rear lower motor mount bolt when you do the lubing to allow the frame to spread. If there is a centerstand on the bike you will have to remove it also to allow the frame to spread. I'd suggest removing all parts of the linkage so you can see the bearings, lube them, and then lube the bolts too. If you wait too late to do this, it can be a challenge to one's patience when removing the long bolts for the swingarm and uni-trak lever. all the best, Mike
