tank cap

Post by Kevin Smith » Fri Aug 01, 2008 5:46 am

I'm having difficulty opening the fuel tank cap on the '90 Tengai I have recently bought. The bike has had little use in the past year and it may be something sticking in the locking mechanism. The key worked last week when I filled the tank. This week the key turns through approx 45 degrees before stopping, - nothing else. From memory the front is supposed to pop up. Any ideas on how I can open the cap ? It appears the locking cap is fitted to the majority of KLR models so I'm guessing others here have experienced a similar issue. I'm hoping a spray of CRC or WD40 may do the trick. Apart from this I'm really enjoying the bike.

Try a shot of lube (in the keyhole and under the cap) and also pressing down on the cap a bit when you turn the key. Once you get it open, lube the whole mechanism with something heavier than WD-40, look for signs of excess wear that could indicate a misalignment, and check that the screws that hold the mechanism to the cap are tight. oversize rotor installation

One tip; every kit I've seen has little spools that hold the disk to the mounting ring. These spools are taller than the wear face of the disk. When your disk brake pads get under .030" thick or so, the metal tab on the brake pad will rub here if you don't notch the pad slightly. Notch that part of the brake pad before installation, and you're good to go for the full life of the pad. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
