There is slight popping on decel and it's probably time to rebuild the carb, slide diaphram in particular as it is got some years on it, does the Air Cut-Off Valve diphram come in a carb rebuild kit?

Have you adjusted the Pilot Circuit ?
The one you have to drill out the cap and turn out to approx 2~2.5
turns out.
If its a slight popping this may just be all you looking for.

Dooden, Yes I did that when I put the Stage 1 kit in. It didn't pop for 15K but started recently. Should I suspect/inspect the deceleration diaphragm/plunger. Also thopugh that screwing out he pilot screw a touch might help. Seafoam was of no help to this condition. Popping on decel can also be caused by a leak at the exhaust gasket
where the pipe goes into the head. I'd check to see if the bolts
there are tight. It's easy to wreck the gasket when you remove and
reinstall the header pipe.
The CVK-40 needs very little attention unless it gets fouled by fuel
floaters (or sinkers). Outside of fuel contaminants, the cause of
most KLR carb problems is KLR owners.

drop in mileage after an oil change ? motorcycle specific- not a
Just to clarify, I was one who stated after trying lots of different
brands and weights that I liked a particular Motorcycle specific oil.
JMHO. There are many who use standard automotive type oils and it
works just fine. There are some who argue that friction modifiers in
automotive oils are a bad idea with the wet clutch plates. (I have
used it without problem).
I first got the idea that synthetics might feel feel nice in the
running motor from a mechanic at a shop I used to frequent. He was a
fan of regular old mobil 1 synthetic (autmobile oil) and swore by in in
an old Kawasaki street bike he had many 10's of thousands of miles on.
He shared this with me after I described the 15w -50 as feeling too
thick and perhaps vibrating at speed. He looked at me and said, "yah,
you might feel that if you really pay attention to how it feels when
your motor runs"
Any hoo this is not an oil thread - I repeat (will robinson) this is
not an oil thread - danger, danger. . . .
I agree with a previous lister that unless your riding in Phoenix or
somewhere similar, 10-40 is probably heavy enough. and yes I have run a
ton of regular automotive oil in the past. no problemo for me. ( I
supposed if you into dragging, hole shots, quarter mile et's, etc it
might be different) Before I got into synthetic, I used to like
Pennzoil 10 - 40. I dunno, it just felt smooth.
I have tried lighter oil too, just going on the better flow is better
idea, I thought the shifting into gear "smacked" into gear more than
ideal, so I homed in on 10-40 as my favorite overall.
. . .I repeat this is not an oil thread . . .
three final words on oil, - keep it clean. todd chaska mn
