When the tank is about empty, pull the petcock out and check for cracks in
the filter. This really sounds like a stuck float in the carb.
Next time it stalls, if you're so inclined, pull the bowl off the carb and
pull the float off and inspect needle and seat. I bet you have dirt there.
I've had large enough chunks in there I'm surprised I didn't bend a rod.
