Hiya guys. I'd like your thoughts on why my fender melted yesterday.
First off, my KLR is an 05 with 46k and the only thing that is not stock is
the K&N air filter. It is not due for a valve clearance check yet and I did
not notice any change in performance. I did just fill with fuel and it did
not smell old or funny. I rode about 40 miles at highway speed in the
morning and when I stopped, my rear fender was melted. I did get a whiff of
what I thought was the smell of spent tolulene. I rode back home in the heat
of the afternoon with no more problems or damage.
Is it possible that I got some really bad gas or do I need to start hunting
for another reason for the extreme exhaust temp?

Did you use the afterburners? When fully applied, bad things can
happen.

Just a guess here, but it sure could be bad gas. The KLR is so mildly
tuned that it will run on almost anything. Bad gas can run pretty hot
and it sure stinks, like turpentine. I'd watch for further
occurances, but you may have already found it.

On my bike, a slightly stuck float made it run lean to where the engine got
hotter than normal. Running lean could be a stuck float (gas leaking out the
overflow) or a vacuum leak (diluting the a/f mixture) or maybe you're low on
coolant?

redralphs klr breakdown ?
Thanks for the input guys. the consensus is most likely the CDI box. I
read the klr FAQ and it says the only way to test it is to switch it
out with a cdi box from a working bike to see if I need a new one. I
live in Puyallup on river road. I am looking to see if someone will
ride their bike here and switch it out to see if I need to buy a new
one. Now, I have new klr accessories, a lot of new stainless steel
folding and fixed knives, or I will have some coin around the middle of
the month to give to anyone who is willing to help me see if the CDI
box is the problem. Is the CDI box under the seat and mounted to the
rear fender?
