valve lapping question...

Dropped it just right and busted one of the stock handguards on my 05 KLR last week, so I'm ready to invest in an aftermarket set. Does anyone have a recommendation for a preferred brand/model? Any installation tips? TYIA- Ben

The PO of my bike put on the Acerbis ones without the metal in them, and they've held up but flex enough to tweak the ends of the levers when you drop it. I have the Acerbis metal ones (can't remember the model) on my DR-Z and they've taken a beating without failure. CA Stu swears by the ones at www.enduroeng.com. __Arden

They are just a bare aluminum metal piece with good mounts for the bars. You can cut your stock handguard mounts off and then drill and tap holes in the Moose barkbusters and mount the stock guards to them for wind/rain protection. I tested my left side on asphalt a few years ago and the stock bar bent but the Moose barkbuster only took a scraping and protected the clutch lever. I have tried Moose, MSR, Acerbis and Maier. Nothing much to choose among them except the aluminum inserts on the Rally Pros seems a little soft and easily deformed. Of course, that means it is also easy to stick them in a vise once in a while to bend them back and re- establish clearance for your levers. As for installation, assemble them loosely and let them find their own angle as you tighten them up. If you don't like the angle, try some of the available adjustments (these may vary from bar to bar) or try rolling your handlebars forward or back. I have never had to bend a set of lever guards in order to get them installed.

deformed. Another one that has been mentioned is the Tusk ATV handguards at Rocky Mountain ATV. They have a mounting method that seems to work better for the bend of our KLR's handlebars. I have the Moose handguards on my KLR right now and a) I had to bend them to shape them to where the holes in the guards lined up with the holes in the mounts, and b) I had to hack the mounts (add a couple of nuts as spacers and use a longer bolt) to get them to fit right. PITA. The Tusk handguards have a slotted hole and pivoting brackets to allow more easily fitting them to weird bends like ATV or KLR handlebars. Only problem I've heard of about the Tusk ATV handguards is that they're wickedly expensive. $29.99 as of today . _E

I put Cycra's on and wouldn't look back. They are a bit pircey but they really work. Pretty easy to mount, good wind blocking and great portection. I dropped it in the garage and the Cycra's took it, saving my clutch lever. I also like the looks. Some of the guards look a bit too "woodsy" for me. The aluminum backing is really strong.
