valve lapping question...

Post by bensherwyn » Mon Jun 30, 2008 6:46 pm

Hey Guys, I successfully installed my new 685 kit over the weekend and I'm in the process of cleaning up my head before booting things up. The exhaust valves had a lot of carbon buildup... I've now cleaned this and begun lapping. My question is... I see some very tiny pock-marks on the valves and the seats. After quite a bit of lapping, things seem very smooth and well mated, but do I need to lap all the way beyond those little markings? How much of a perfectionist do I need to be here? Any advice will be helpful. Thanks Again! Ben Oakland, CA

Posted it to Craigs list in Vermont but maybe someone on this list likes "old tech" bikes. ;') It's a 2000 KDX 220R. Bottom end bearing blown in the crank. Cylinder wall scored. Everything else is mint. Still has the OEM front tire on it, so that's an indicator as to how much use it has seen. Has skid plate, radiator guards, and straight wheels. Also has a barely used Baja Designs dual-sport kit with LED tail/brake light and flush mount rear turnsignals. Original headlight and shroud, tail light, and rear fender included. Engine is already pulled from bike. Asking $1000. (dual sport kit alone cost close to $500). You can have Fredette Racing rebuild it for you for somehwere around a grand or rebuild it yourself for far less. (I blew my repair budget between fixing the KTM and buying the '93 KLR) I'm in southern VT and would prefer local pick up. I can help with transport if necessary, but only after the deal is sealed.
