how long does a klr last?

Post by Paul » Sat Jun 21, 2008 8:28 pm

Hi Richard My '87A1 now has approx 160,000kms (100,000mls) on it. I have done all but 20,000 of those. I have just ordered a Wossner piston kit for it as it is a bit rattly and uses a fair bit of oil. Other than changing the cam & balancer chains (and tensioner blades) all I have done is regular stuff ie oil & filters etc. It is also down on power compared to the '08s ;)> ymmv griffo All, I was curious, how many miles does everyone get out of there KLR's until you start running into serious issues. By serious issues, I mean throwing a rod, transmission blowing up, etc... At what mileage (roughly) does some sort of part break on the KLR that is more expensive to fix then the bike is worth? I know if you are a gear head like myself, you are constantly replacing bad parts and keeping the bike in top notch shape. But even then typically you can only get 250,000 miles of a typical ford car before it starts dying. Does anyone have input on this? I personally have a hair over 32,000 miles on my bike, 5,000 of them are mine. The engine is on its 1st oversize piston and has had a couple seals replaced, other then the 1st oversize piston and rings, the bike has not had any serious issues (From what the previous owners have told me which are fairly credible) -- Regards, Richard Bessey System Administrator Vivio Technologies Phone: 509-956-3050 Ext. 1005
