for sale - 1996 klr 650 "project bike" $1k or b/o nj pickup

1996 Kawasaki KLR650 somewhere around 11k miles Has a few accessories on it, skid plate, bark busters on the bars, luggage racks and bags Givi G36 bags. The racks are black and a Happy Trails variant I can't recall now. Stainless brake lines front and back. Bike is a project bike at this point. Was running fine when it last ran 2yrs ago. Has been outdoors since. Will need Tank drained Carb cleaned and rebuilt Oil changed Tires are old, should be replaced though they are holding air Chain could probably be replaced Needs a new water pump seal, was starting to weep a bit The switch gear could use a good cleaning too I'm sure Selling as-is, would like a grand for it with all the luggage racks and bags etc. Pick up local in NJ only please Pics are here, though it is a bit more weather worn now http://www.kingsqueak.org/photos/klr650/8.html Reason for selling...never really did relax enough in NJ traffic to enjoy it unfortunately. I will miss it for sure.

With all the tire posts recently and local current events I was wondering who has been bitten by a tire change that resulted in radically different handling characteristics??? The current event here in Ketchikan is that my son the "hooligan" has been laid up for the past two weeks with minor injuries suffered in a underwear staining crash. Thought I had the DRZ SM sold to a local guy, as part of the deal I had the original SM tires, about 200 miles on them, put back on the bike because the "hooligan" had torched the Avon Extreme Wet rear tire when he found out I had sold the bike. Took the bike to the local Honda dealer and had them install the new/original tires on the bike for the "new" owner.(I would change my own tires but felt that since the bike was "sold" to another party I would like the confidence that it would be done correctly or I would not be the one fingers were being pointed at when something went south.) So the "new" owner backed out of the deal. Had my son go pick up the bike at the dealership and bring it home, less than a half mile. Was raining that day so he didn't ride. A few days later he takes the bike from home to his girlfriends house at lunch. As he has been on the road to her home hundreds of times on the bike he didn't realize that riding techniques must change to fit the current condition of road, weather, and TIRES!!! As he relates the story the front end washed out from underneath him when he hit a patch of gravel on the pavement in front of her home. Making the decision to let it continue to lay down he more or less gets off, low side, however as he and the bike are parting company the front tire catches a large rock which brings it more or less back to vertical. He catches up with the bike, sliding on his ass, just in time to collide with the bike and be thrown to the high side in a full "superman" sprawl. (a fulcrum and lever sort of thing) The shield on his modular helmet was destroyed by his full face down slide in the gravel. When I met the boy at the Emergency room his eyes were so f....ing huge and all he could talk about was "Dad, I was sliding and all I could do was look straight down and see rocks passing by the shield" He was so jacked up that was all he could remember for awhile. Boys okay, damage to right foot and ankle the worst, minimal road rash for the speed involved. Bike will survive with less damage than my deductible most likely. (damn it!!) Progressive Insurance has been great for service so far, will see how it all plays out. Oh and as far as Ny-Ties go I use the ones that acoustical ceiling installers use for fine tuning their track installs. About a half inch wide 30inches long and really skookum. Strongest I have ever seen. For those heavy duty applications as good or better than the ss steel hose clamps in my opinion. Gotta close, the gimp wants ice cream.
