neutral light failure

Post by Jim Tegler » Sun Jun 15, 2008 3:15 pm

Howdy, Thanks for the responses on this topic they have given my brain some fodder for rumination. I don't know if I've been clear that my bike starts with the clutch lever "out" as long as the bike has the green neutral light on. Will bypassing the clutch safety switch make the bike start whether the light is on or not? I was interested in making the neutral light more reliable by better attaching the wire next to the countershaft sprocket? I'm thinking that I should solder the connection or just put a dab of "quicksteel" on it? No? The problem occurs when the bike doesn't receive the electrical signal that it is in neutral and therefore a safety mechanism(aren't motorcycles all about accepting risk?!) prevents the bike from starting. The fix seems to be simple enough and requires removing the countershaft cover and making a connection with the green wire
and the metal peg that pokes out of the transmission case. I would like to make this contact more permanent than it is without having the wire permanently attached. Any ideas?

when you cleaned the carb, did you remove the needle screws, if so did you count the turns and set them back the way they were. when i clean a carb, i usualy use ether, it breaks hard deposits up well. i then lube the viton needle and moving assemblies with wd-40. it sounds like you may have a passage plugged or something still. was there any hard debree or deposits in the carb the first time you cleaned it. did you remove (drill out) the plug that covers the idle mixture screw and remove/clean those passsages?
