kick starts
My 99 KTM 640 does. The earlier year KLRs had an optional kickstart
taht could be installed. Some have retrofitted that to newer model
KLRs IIRC.

kick starts
I grew up riding the old TT500's and the DR370 (my only new bike I ever bought) and would perfer to never start another 4 stroke with a kick starter. The KLR does not need a battery to run and can be push started. As hard as the old bikes could be to start, after a fall or when cold, I would not even want to try and start my KLR that way. I recommend that you never ride alone, carry some small jumper cables on one of the bikes and keep a good battery on your bike. I have only been towed out of the backwoods once and that bike had a kick starter. Good luck and ride hard and ride often.

From the Arch go South on I-55 to Bates. Turn right on Bates to
Gravois. Turn left on Gravois. On street parking only. I will be
there rain or shine. Hope to see you there. My 99 KLR is considered
vintage isn't it? Ken
