Hiya Stephen. When I changed coolant in mine, I pulled the thermostat housing and thermostat and filled it through the rad till coolant ran out of the opening That was 14,000 miles ago and though it is probably not the right way to bleed the system, it worked for me. This is also a good time to put in a new thermostat. The bolt in the post that you are talking about, holds the spring against the the cam chain tensioner. As long as you did not loosen the two little bolts at the base of the post, you should be ok, just check for oil leaks. If you loosened the two little bolts, you will need to reset the tensioner so it don't over tighten the cam chain. This is easy to do once you see what it looks like in a manual. Hope this helps. I put the coolant back into the reservoir thinking the level would drop when I started the KLR650 or when the thermostat opened up but nothing moved. I am looking for a bleeder valve to let air in so the coolant can flow to the water pump. Where is it? Also, I found a large bolt in the center of a post that is right in front of the starter motor. I removed it thinking it might be the bleeder valve, but a spring popped out. I put it back and returned the bolt. Did I mess anything up? I bought a 2005 used klr last summer and even though I'm 5'11" I still have trouble putting both feet on the ground when I'm just sitting on the bike. I wanted to buy the Dual Star combination but they are 3 months behind in production. Their total lowering was 1 1/2". Who else makes something equivalent to that? Here in the Rockies, all a bike rider can do is get the bike prepared for this coming summer and dream about warmer days.
