17" front wheel

Post by * Deks* » Sat Apr 24, 2004 4:37 pm

Hi everyone, Has anyone put supermoto wheels on the KLR and successfully solved the speedometer problem? I have a 17" front wheel now and my speedo is showing 110km/h when I'm doing 100km/h. Any advice will be helpfull... Not really a "solution", but a work-around. Go to a bicycle shop and buy a digital speedometer for $20. It will be more accurate anyway. Maybe some Kawasaki bike had a 17" wheel and a speedo gearbox that's the same as the KLR, but I have no idea. Devon dek5@... wrote:

My winter wheels (extra set with the studded tires) has the tabs broked off for the speedo. I use my GPS for speed readout. One of them thar bicycle speedos would do just fine as well. millerized -- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "* Deks*" wrote:

One warning on the bike computer setup. I have one on my KLR (a Sigma 1600), and you can easily set it up for any wheel/tire combo-- use the "rollout" method listed in the manufacturer's instructions. The only problem with most all bike computers is the length of the wire. Make sure you get the "rear wheel" kit for whatever computer you get. Some companies don't make a rear wheel kit, so beware. The rear wheel kit is basically the same mount and wire kit as the stocker, it just offers a longer wire. Some have experimented with "wireless" bike speedos, but ignition interference may affect some or all of them. I haven't had much long term luck with wireless models, even on my mountainbike. I think they work better on road- only bicycles, but any rough terrain and vibration seems to cause an early death. A bike computer gives a ton of other info like average speed, time actually moving, highest speed, and others. They work, and they're small enough to fit on the handlebar easily. Thad Carey A15

17" front wheel

I'm giving serious consideration to mounting a 17" front wheel on my KLR. I'm thinking "motard". Can anyone advise me on where to find a new rim and spokes? How about a spare wheel to work with. I'd like to keep the 21 incher. I've read that it isn't too difficult to do the switcheroo. It just takes some patience and a decent source to true up and balance the wheel.
