which center stand?

Post by imfreelandian » Sun Feb 10, 2008 11:16 am

I'd like to get a center stand for my '04, seems like a handy addition. They range in price from $105 to $160. Are the more expensive ones worth the difference? I'll often be running with bags, camping gear, etc. so I'm considering Eagle Mike's raising links. I'd prefer a stand that will work with these. A friend has them on his '02 and really likes them. Opinions? Thanks, Gerry

Beware, they have a tendency to chew up the footpeg mounts. Michael -- "It ain't those parts of the Bible that I can't understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand." -- Mark Twain San Francisco, CA

I've had a center stand on my 2006 for 39,000 miles and have had zero issues with it. It has made my life easier dealing with maintenance. Tim......

My experience is with the one SW-Motech German one sold by Twisted Throttle. It mounts between the footpeg frame boxes and the footpeg brackets. That is already a weak area on KLRs. By sandwiching the mount in between, it requires longer bolts which are supplied. Problem is, the action of putting the bike on and off the stand exerts lots of leverage on those already weak footpeg mounts. Mine loosened up constantly, even though they were torqued and Loctited in place. Every time I checked them (once a week or so) at least one of them would be loose. Eventually the threads got buggered to the point where they wouldn't take the torque any more. I ended up getting rid of the stand and upgraded the footpeg mounts. No more centerstand for me. http://michaelnel.smugmug.com/gallery/3816778_raukH#220498871 Michael -- "It ain't those parts of the Bible that I can't understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand." -- Mark Twain San Francisco, CA

That definitely looks like it is two to three times stronger. Nice job. It's to bad Kawi didn't pay more attention to this part simply because it would almost certainly be a disaster if it were to fail. Tim...

double trouble

Post by Jeff Saline » Sun Feb 10, 2008 7:00 pm

Listers, The below is from Jake and sent to me. The greetings are to the list too so I thought I'd share it with you. Can anybody give him a pointer or two on the coolant pump? Best, Jeff Saline ABC # 4412 South Dakota Airmarshal Airheads Beemer Club www.airheads.org The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650, 79 R100RT <><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> --------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jacobus De Bruyn To: Jeff Saline Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2008 15:56:03 -0800 (PST) Subject: double trouble Message-ID: Hi Jeff, and listers, There was small plug in the fan system that was badly corroded, all green inside, the blue wire going to the fan motor. I eliminated the plug, and connected the wires. The manual fan switch was in the live wire, so I changed that to the ground wire, as it should be. The fan motor has juice all the time, and when I flip the switch, it starts to run. The 10 amp fuse was ok. I charged the battery yesterday to 13,7 and this morning it still had a good 12,6. I installed it back on the bike, and it started good, and the fan works good, all seems well. But, as you say, if there was a short, the fuse should have blown, so the mystery still remains. But that s all I can do to electricity to-day. When I was about to take off the tank, I noticed it was leaking. The history of this tank is first a haircrack near the flange where the two bolts go. Secondly, a crash on cinderblocks, and I had it repaired nicely, new paintjob and all. But... The tank was leaking where the flange is attached, right between the two bolt holes. After I scraped it, you could stick a screwdriver in the tank, the opening perhaps 1,5" long and one mm thick. I put in Epoxy goop, feels hard. special stuff for gastanks. Then I decided to drain the coolant. I saw some wetness around the inspection hole under the pump. I found that the reserve tank was MT. It looked like it was half full, because the coolant had left a dirty marking inside the tank, so I had assumed it was ok. The radiator was full though. But the tanks and pump are very dirty, there is brown muck every where. Is there a liquid for cleaning this system, or just flush it with the same new coolant, and then refill after a while? I understand that I will have to replace the seals in the pump if the inspection hole shows dampness? How do you get the impeller off, as the nut is tight, and the whole things turns? I will check Marknet and Leftcoastklrs for how to do instructions, and then try to obtain the seals. With all this commotion, the shock spring issue has paled into the background. So, I am in the middle of interesting times, but, remember, no winter, I need to ride all the time. good to have a spare YBR125. That seems not to work for wives, you re only allowed one. I am afraid this KLR is a bit to complicated for an unexperienced Mr. Goodwrench like myself. Thanks for the help, and maybe someone else gets wiser too. I screw up, you laugh and learn, and you re welcome. Jacostarica.

which center stand?

Post by Rick » Sun Feb 10, 2008 8:37 pm

My wife and I each have center stands on our KLR's, we bought ours from Fred at Arrowhead Motor Sports. We don't ride the gnarly off road stuff that some of the riders here do. But we have been in Canada, Alaska, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Belize in the last two years and mostly on backroads or libre roads. I/we love our center stands for changing tires/fixing flats, oiling chains, changing the front sprocket to a small one for going down to Batopilas and more. Yes, we scrape our center stands occasionally on topes south of the border but with over 20,000 miles on both bikes, I don't have any plans on taking them off.
