[dsn_klr650] muffler cutaway and performance

    I want to thrown in my two cents worth on the headlight modulator discussion.  I understand the idea behind them, I've seen them used, but I personally don't feel they would be worth much.    i agree. in fact, i'm not convinced that having headlights on is a good thing. i saw references many years ago to a small study that indicated that while daytime headlights made it easier to see a vehicle, they also made it harder to judge the speed and distance of an approaching vehicle. apparently, the test subjects consistently underestimated the speed of the vehicles with headlights on. my own informal experience bears this out. the light doesn't seem to change much in intensity, and it seems to interfere somehow with the depth perception that helps us accurately judge approach speed. it's *possible* that daytime headlights could contribute to situations where drivers see you, but turn left in front of you anyway.    at any rate, if someone is waiting to turn left, i slow down 5-10mph anyway. it makes them wait a little longer, but it makes me feel like i can stop if i have to. there are lots of volvo drivers where i live. mw

acknowledge our presence at all. If their mirrors are adjusted anywhere near correctly, the lights can't help but be right in their eyes. Even if not, you can see the light from the strobes bouncing off of things ahead of them, even in the daytime. Arne, (or anyone else here in emergency services) do you notice the same situation with lights? I've noticed that this applies to "life" in general. Myself included. People only notice things they are making an attempt to look for. Signs are another good example. As for rear view mirrors, I saw a study one time on how often drivers checked behind them in their mirrors. While some people check frequently (which I try to do), some hardle know they are there. But hey, if people don't get out of your way, there's always the sidewalk right? =^) Arne

You know I was thinking about a modulated accessory light for visibility. But for the cases when cagers just don't check their six, and I'm waiting patiently for them to get out of the passing lane. I think I'll flip the switch to the modulated light and hit the soon to be modulate horn. Big smiles will be had.... And since light modulators aren't illegal and horns can be anything you want, well I just may have to do it. Wonder where I can get my hands on a strobe chirper. Could make one for $5-$10 but I do have a life and better things to do. LaterZ Dash

For what it's worth, I once followed a BMW R bike for a few hundred KM. He had a pair of little LED Flasher packs mounted about 1 inch below his taillight. They sure caught your attention. The taillight didn't flash, just the LEDs. Only about 1/2 by 1 inch each, 10-12 LEDs on each. A worthwhile investment I think If I could find them somewhere. John --- Dash Weeks wrote:

See if you can get a copy of BMW Owners News, published by BMWMOA. Its full of ads for such nick-nacks. BTW, my dad has these on his R100/7...I think you could see him from low earth orbit when he hits the brakes. -Tom '96 KLR 650 '77 R60/7

little led flasher gizmos are readily available at bike shops everywhere. they're pretty much standared night safety equipment for bicyclists.
