Was cleaning the carb the only thing that you did before it spewed? Could just be some gunk that loosened up when you cleaned the carb. If the black smoke persists, then it sounds like it's running way too rich. Too much petrol. Is the needle jet collar in place? John O.

i'm in swingarm hell...

I just lubed my swing arm and UniTrac pivots. I found adequate grease in the rocker arm needle bearings. However, my swing arm bolt had completely corroded and rusted in the center. Removing the rust and corrosion also removed the plating from this long bolt so hopefully, grease will prevent further corrosion. My bike has maybe been washed 3 times with low pressure and very little water. It has never been ridden in the rain. I was surprise at the damage. Depending on the year of your bike, the UnitTrac bushing may have a retainer circlip. Looking at the KLR shop manual, the older models appear to have the circlip and washer retaining the bushing. My 98 KLR did not have circlips and the bushing pushed out easily once the nut and bolt were removed. I found the seals that protect the needle bearings in the rocker arm to be very sloppy even though my bike only has 4700 miles and few offroad miles. -svt-
