Radar Paint Disaster!

Post by randycurry13 » Wed Dec 30, 2015 8:04 am

Ok here is the deal.  I decided to go with the two tone paint scheme on my radar. After primer I painted the whole radar section with Duplicolor Light Slate Metallic.  It looked great!  Then after several days drying time, I started the masking process. This took longer than I anticipated. In fact I worked on it over several nights.  I then spayed the ribs and ring the Duplicolor Gunmetal Metallic. The next day I removed the tape (blue painters tape). Everything looked really good. A few more days of drying I wiped everything thing down, checked for problems then clear coated. Almost immediately, tape lines started appearing!  Nothing was visible prior to the clear coat. These are not raised lines, almost like a faint negative image. I can't even get a good photo of it. As I rotate the radar under a light the lines appear and disappear.  I feel a repaint is required but I don't want this to happen again. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hi Randy
Are you talking about the central band around the base of the radar section? I was going to attempt masking and painting but instead cut a strip of clear polypropylene (think that's what I used), painted one side gun-metal gray, and then wrapped it around that radar section with the non-painted, glossy side out. It fit perfectly and I used small strips of double-sided tape on the seam (which is in the back) to adhere it. The effect is pretty cool, glossier than the rest of the radar and doesn't require an overcoat.

Daniel,

No actually it was on the top of the radar section. I have since re-masked, wet sanded, and have just applied the first light coat of paint. My guess is that the elapsed time in the taping process may have discolored the paint. Or, I did use two different types of painters tape in the process. The first was from Harbor Freight (my bad!). The second was 3M painters tape. Time will tell.  If it happens again it my be the first B9 with a gloss black radar section, LOL!

Aww Randy, that sucks! I've had a few painting mishaps like this. They always leave me feeling a little sick.
Could you actually feel depressions in the paint when you ran your finger over the area? It really sounds like the primer and paint weren't compatible and didn't cure properly. Either that or one of the products were old and expired and didn't cure properly.
Hopefully your second effort will cover and give you a desired finish. It usually does. Please keep us posted and good luck.

Ick. Painting can be a nightmare. My first attempt on the radar section the paint reacted in some fashion and wrinkled. Had to strip it all off and start again. That was a two week process :-P

Hi Randy, I have a little experience in these matters, you should remove the painters tape as soon as you are done painting and at a 45 degree angle. Here is an article that can explain it better than I. Painting Tape 101 | Painter's Mate GreenAnd another from the makers of Scotch blue painters tape. 3M US: ScotchBlue Brand - FAQsThese pages have helped me in the past and I hope you can find something there you can use.Jim  From: B9Builders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:B9Builders@yahoogroups.com]
